Breakfast – breaking the fast of the long dark night, refueling for the day ahead.
They say this is the most important meal of the day and one should eat it like a King. There is some irony then that the very humblest of food stuffs is by far the best mode of transport to carry both mind and body into the day ahead.
Oats, oatmeal – Porridge the traditional breakfast of Scotland.
I love the contradiction of all this, the soothing qualities of oats work wonders at calming the mind and releasing stress and yet they are a powerhouse of strength enabling us to for further for longer.
I make mine in the old fashioned way with water and a pinch of salt, but I like to liven up my porridge with another Scottish classic – raspberries. Red and juicy they are both sweet and tart at the same time and add a lightness and frivolity to this most basic dish.
So many contradictions to make the mind dance, so much taste and texture, what a wonderful way to start the day.
